Open Bowls, specifically Vintage Open Bowls can be so very elegant in their simplicity. I feel their utilitarian purpose is far overshadowed by their aesthetic. Clean simple designs, glazed richly with age-old patina is unable to be reproduced today. The lowly bowl is not so lowly after all!

N is for Nippon/ Noritake

Nippon is china manufactured in Japan from 1891 through 1921, at which time the Nippon name was changed to Noritake. The country of Japan had a closed door trade policy with the U.S. for 200 years until the signing of a Trade Treaty in 1858. A year after that trade agreement a Japanese delegation arrived in the States and by 1876 Tchizaemon Morimura and his younger brother had founded an export trading company called Morimura Gumi in Giza, Tokyo. Their retail shop was established in NYC as Morimura Brothers. Back in Nogoya, Japan in 1912, I. Morimura founded Nippon Toki Kaishia, Ltd followed very quickly by the Meito Company and a few others that did not withstand the test of time. From 1920 through the 1930's, Noritake reigned in Japan and perfected the very popular Lustre Ware using metallic film over glaze, thus reflecting the Art Deco Style of the time. Noritake has been continually manufacturing quality china in the United States since the 1960's. Countless pieces of beautifully hand decorated wares can still be found today, with most very reasonably priced. Talk about setting a gorgeous table and enjoying the hunt at the same time. Simply Beautiful!

Style by Emily Henderson is having a dollhouse Design Challenge. I don't know about you, but I had a thing for miniatures at one time in my life. It happened to coincide with the miniature age of my daughter, Talia and with a specific Christmas gift in the year 1996 when she was 9. Below you will discover the ensuing fruits of our labor, accomplished over the course of two years. She and I assembled, glued, painted, papered and shopped for all of it. (Electrifying it required some help.) Without sounding obsessed, it really was a lot of fun. To participate in Emily Henderson's Challenge, I unearthed the behemoth from the bowels of the basement, dusted it off, and re-decorated the interior spaces as we, mother and daughter, had done so lovingly (and sometimes, not so lovingly) together.

That last word is the essence of what makes this dollhouse so beautiful to me. Enjoy the tour!

L is for Lu-Ray

Lu Ray Pastels 'Empire Shape' semi-porcelain dish ware was manufactured by Taylor-Smith and Taylor Co. (TS&T) from 1938-1961 in Chester, WV. The Company was in business from 1899 through the 1970's, at which time it was bought out by Anchor Hocking Glass. The Lu Ray Pastel pattern is charming in its elegant art deco simplicity with lovely muted toned colors. The four original pastels include: Sharon Pink, Persian Cream, Windsor Blue, and Surf Green. A fifth coloration, Chatham Gray, introduced in 1949, is considered a premium color; more rare therefore more expensive. I recently came across a Lu Ray Chatham Gray Teapot selling for $670! For the most part, Lu Ray items are readily available and most affordable, providing that sweet little addition of cool vintage to your modern home. Happy Hunting!

Ode to Halloween

All-Hallows-Eve harkens back 2000 years to Celtic festivals commemorating the end of summer harvests. These festivities, celebrated on the November 1st New Year of Samhain (pronounced sow-en) were replete with celebratory offerings of food and drink to the spirits. It was believed the night before the New Year - October 31st - allowed both bad and good spirits from the dead to mingle amongst the living. Celts dressed in outlandish costumes - known as guising - and roamed the community begging for food while hoping to scare away the evil spirits. Hallowed out turnips were used as lights to guide these 'guisers' through the darkness and bonfires were lit to honor Pagan gods. Faeries were said to be present during Samhain protecting these beggars from the evil spirits. It was believed that people who gave food to the beggars were rewarded; those that did not were punished.

Over the next several hundred years, Christianity's influence replaced the Pagan rituals of All Hallowmas, with All Saints Day as a church designated holiday. All Souls Day / All Saints Day was celebrated in England by going 'a-souling' door to door asking for food in return for prayers for the dead. Halloween was not celebrated by the early settlers of the United States as they were Protestant and as such did not believe in saints. It was the Irish immigrants during the mid 1800's that brought the custom of making Jack-o'Lanterns from pumpkins and the tradition of Trick-or-Treating as we know it today. Happy Halloween! Jewelry.... throughout history it has existed as an integral part of human expression and wealth. Beginning with the first rudimentary necklace of shells strung together with twine and continuing into the reigns of Egyptian, Greek and Roman Kings. When gold, silver, and cameos were introduced to the world many millenniums ago, jewelry existed as a form of currency, a symbol of the gods, and the ultimate in physical adornment.

During the Middle Ages (5th-14th C), Christian monasteries designed religious jewelry as a means of supporting themselves. The Renaissance (15th-17th C) became known as the Jewel Age, with secular creations of jewelry as works of art for the sole purpose of enhancing beauty. Gemstones were prized for their lustrous colors; diamonds for their rarity. Improved methods for cutting diamonds increased their availability during the 17th C and beyond. Each period in history - Georgian (1714-1830), Victorian (1837-late 1880's), Arts&Crafts (1894-1923), Art Nouveau (1890-1915), Edwardian (1901-1910), Art Deco (1920-1935), Retro (1935-1949), 1950's, 1960's, 1970's, 1980-1990, to present - corresponds with specific jewelry designs identifiable with that place in time. Most people eat to live. Italians live to eat. I know this first hand as I am the product of two generations of venerable foragers. My earliest memories are of my grandfather, donning his old leather shoes, thread bare plaid shirt jacket, khakis and, most importantly, his 'lucky' basket as he set out for the Great Mushroom Hunt. My grandfather even went as far as noting: 'October 12th is THE best day to find the best mushrooms.' And find them he did. There were all sorts of ways to stave off thieves from his 'areas'... Stones were carefully placed along leaf-strewn woodland paths to

indicate coveted locations where the little gems seemed to thrive . 'Good spots' were returned to days later, especially after soaking rains, when the mushrooms exploded as if from outer space. And, there were the Italian names for the delectable fungii: signorinas and manellas which were among the most prized treasures. Who cares enough to take pictures of a car trunk full of mushrooms, as proud as if it were a grandchild?! It initially was all about the hunt, as I can relate to as an antique nut, but ultimately it was all about the food. This tradition was passed down to my dad, who passed it down to each of his five children. I, as an avowed naturalist, need no excuse to go into the woods. Foraging for mushrooms with my 80 something year old dad is a treat beyond words. And the reward... well, that is priceless.

A mushroom 'expert' is known as a mycologist. Before attempting to forage, be smart and educate yourself. Classes are available at Community Colleges and local Environmental organizations. I highly recommend the National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms, published by Gary H. Lincoff. It is well organized with beautiful photos and descriptions. Remember this: All mushrooms are edible - once!

Tried and True Mushroom Saute - Made the Italian Way

Thoroughly wash soil and leaves from fungii; cut into bite sized slices/pieces, bring to a boil for a minute or two in slightly salted water with a splash of lemon. Drain, rinse, freeze or proceed to cook by sauteing in olive oil: a sliced onion, minced garlic (2-3 cloves), chopped tomato, and parsley. Add drained mushrooms, seasoned with salt, hot pepper flakes and a splash of white wine or vermouth with olive oil to finish. Mushrooms will be ready to eat in 5 to 10 minutes. Enjoy!

Imperial Glass Company was founded in 1904 by J.N. Vance of New Crystal Glass (1901). With the help of Edward Muhleman in Bellaire, OH it produced beautiful handmade glassware and continued manufacturing pressed glass with the advent of machinery during the early 20th C. Rapid growth and demand for glass continued and in 1909 Imperial introduced its first line of Carnival Glass, popularized by Fenton and others. It became known as one of the most elegant glassware companies in the US. The most recognized pattern from Imperial Glass is Candlewick (1939) whose design was inspired by a Colonial needlework technique and is often confused with the similar Anchor Hocking Burple pattern. More than 200 items were produced in the Candlewick line, competing with Fostoria Glass America and Cambridge Glass Rosepoint as the most collectible patterns of all time. It also launched the Cape Cod pattern as giveaway items in conjunction with the Quaker Oats Company and supplied F.W. Woolworth with much of its utilitarian glassware. During the 1920's, Imperial introduced its elegant and art glass lines known respectively as Nu-Cut and Nu-Art, imitating higher-end crystal and Tiffany glass. Yet despite the quality and popularity of its glassware the recession of the 1950's, coupled with the availability of inexpensive glassware from abroad strained the company to the breaking point. Although it filed for bankruptcy in 1931 and was able to recover, the global market changes of the mid 20th C proved too much. Lenox Glass of NJ bought out Imperial Glass in 1973, keeping it going until 1984 when production of all patterns from Imperial ceased. Although I recently came across a 6" Candlewick clear blown glass Candy Box with lid listed for $400.00 (!), generally pieces of Imperial Glassware are affordably available as elegant accents for your home. Following is an interview with Design Coach and Editor of New England Finery Magazine, Yvonne Blacker.

Yvonne is a Fine Arts and Advertising Communications graduate of Boston College. She has worked in the fields of Graphic Design and Marketing in the Boston area prior to being a mother to four (!) boys. This was the job which led Yvonne to discover her true passion of home decorating/design. Her ability to apply design strategies and principles to interior spaces served her clients well as she decorated and brought life to homes in need - a Visual Communicator Extraordinaire!

1. Tell us about some first creative moments that led you to this career in Interior Design.

" I have always loved to draw and create. All through high school I pursued artistic instruction and got my first real job at the age of 16 working in a gift shop. Although I was hired to ring the register, I began illustrating and lettering promotions for the store, and was soon relied upon to design ads for the local paper. I pursued art studies in college, did a lot of pen and ink illustrations and began to learn how to do it all on the computer, which I absolutely love! Upon having children, decorating our home became something I enjoyed and found I was pretty good at. This soon led to clients seeking advice, which parlayed me into the world of interior design. In March 2009, I began a blog, Design Vignettes as a way to chronicle and explore interesting design-related topics, which in turn led to the creation of an on-line magazine, New England Finery."

2. Connect the dots to your current position.

"As Editor at New England Finery, I am able to combine my love for interior and graphic design with marketing, which brings all of my education and work experiences full circle. The bi-monthly issues allow for a definite beginning and end to the project which is quite satisfying, as well as an opportunity to explore design topics in greater detail."

3. What is the best - and worst - aspect of your job as Interior Decorator.

"I enjoy helping clients tell their stories by utilizing their prized possessions while creating a beautiful home. It is also very satisfying to help them discover their design sensibility while teaching them how to pull it all together with color and fabrics. The worst part of this job for me is spending money as my philosophy of working with what you have and the resources at hand resonates through and through."

4. What would your colleagues be surprised to learn about you?

"Probably that my house is far from 'done'.... My husband and I bought a fixer-upper and we have been fixing-it-up for eight years now! It is an old farmhouse with an attached barn that I have dreams to turn into a family room/function hall... someday. It would be a good thing if we get around to renovating it within the next five years - in time for our oldest son's graduation from high school!"

5. Are there any obstacles to your ambitions?

"Running out of time! Our family life is pretty simple and we try not to over schedule the kids or ourselves. However, managing a household of six people is time consuming to say the least. I probably food shop every three days and do two to three loads of laundry daily! When I am working on meeting a deadline for New England Finery, I have to shut my office door in order to get it done. I am willing to let a lot of housekeeping slide when it's crunch time."

6. Name a pet peeve.

"I like rooms that don't feel like they come out of a particular catalogue, store, or showroom. I prefer layered looks with a variety of furnishings from different sources. Personal objects that are unique to the homeowners are far more interesting to me than pieces that I have seen repeated over again. A home should reflect the people who live there, not someone else's design story."

7. What is your most treasured possession?

"I'd have to say my camera! I take it everywhere I go and use it to record family memories, to chronicle my work and to capture views of the world that inspires me. A close second would be my computer. With it I can bring my ideas to life, whether they are in the form of a magazine layout or a design board for a decorating client. I am on it every day and have serious withdrawal symptoms when apart from it for too long! There is one decorative item - a pretty chandelier - hanging in my office that was chosen especially for me; it makes me smile every time I see it."

Hazel Ware Capri, Colonial Swirl pattern, 1960's

In 1902, Hazel Atlas Glass Company was founded in Washington, PA, a result of a merger between four companies: Hazel Glass & Metals Co. (1887), the Atlas Glass Co. (1896), Wheeling Metal Plant, and the Republic Glass Co. The Hazel Atlas Glass Company expanded into fifteen locations (including plants in WV, OH, AL, and CA among others) to become the largest manufacturer of glassware in the world! Although utilitarian products from paste bottles to cold cream and mayonnaise jars represented the bulk of the company's assets, it was the expansion into dinnerware that catapulted the company to stardom. In the early 1920's through the Depression, Hazel Atlas produced beautiful affordable table ware in a myriad of colors and styles, beginning with the Ovide pattern (1923). Initially manufactured in green only it ultimately sustained Hazel Atlas for the next thirty years as the number one producer of Depression Glass. Its dinnerware line was expanded into the following patterns: Aurora/Lydia Roy (1937-38), Cloverleaf (1930-36), Colonial Block (1920's-30's), Florantine 1&2 ((1932-1953), Fruits (1931-53), Moderntone/Wedding Band (1934-early 50's), Platonite (1930-40), New Century (1930-35), Newport/Hairpin (1936-40), Ovide (1923-35), Ribbon/Roxana (1932), Royal Lace (1934-42), Ships, and Starlight (1938-40).

A myriad of colors were introduced such as Sunset Pink, yellow, Ritz Blue, amethyst and opaque white glass (similar to the milk glass popularized during the Victorian era). Hazel Atlas colors were distinguishable from other glass companies with trademarks and patents on several designs. Despite the variety of colors available, the most popular continued to be clear, green and Platonite (a process whereby color was essentially sprayed over opaque white glass). The 'HA' mark was first used in 1923 on the undersides of glassware, represented with the letter 'A' nestled under the letter 'H'.

Hazel Atlas' success made them one of the few publicly traded companies to pay a stock dividend during the Great Depression of the 1930's. The company remained in business until it was bought out by the Continental Can Company in 1956, with a line of Hazelware produced until 1963. You may find this awesome vintage Made in the USA glassware just about anywhere - beginning in your mom's or grandma's basements.... Have fun using and decorating with this happy Depression Glass from Hazel Atlas, guaranteed to make you smile!

It is the end of summer, practically.... Despite tornadoes, earthquakes and Hurricane Irene all I

want to do is Sit on the Dock of the Bay. Otis really had something there; it is the ultimate key to enjoying life and taking stock of the surrounding beauty. I hope he made time for it.

As our senses are bombarded with external stimuli and our days get filled with 'things to do' that languid pace of summer noticeably quickens. I am taking much pleasure in looking back; you could say 'wastin' my time away'. I am reminded of Otis Redding who was born on September 9; a birthday that is one week to the day later than my eldest son's birthday. Significant to me as my son turns 26 - the year Otis Redding was when his life was cut short tragically in a plane crash. Otis Redding (1941-1967) - an American Soul singer/songwriter and record producer of the first posthumous Number One Single in US Chart history selling 4 million copies worldwide. He died one month before its release.

Wouldn't you all agree we need more Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay. More... Much more........

Grueby Pottery began in Boston, MA , 1894, as the Grueby Faience Company producing terra cotta and glazed bricks. It was founded by William H. Grueby (1867-1925) a ceramist who was inspired by the gorgeous French pottery exhibited at the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. Grueby experimented with glaze colors and perfected shades of yellow, aqua and pink, as well as his signature matte green glaze which ultimately catapulted him to success. An exhibition at the Society of Arts and Crafts of Boston in 1897 increased his exposure with the pieces so well received as to be imitated by other Arts and Craft Potters of the time - Hampshire, Teco, Pewabic, Van Briggle, Roseville, Weller, and Rookwood.

Grueby won two Gold Medals and a Silver Medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition, as well as countless accolades at the 1901 Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, NY. By 1905 Grueby Pottery was being sold at the Tiffany Studios in NYC where clients viewed entire rooms on display for purchase. Gustav Stickley also collaborated with the potter at trade fairs. Grueby Art Pottery pieces focused on hand-applied florals stylized during the Arts and Craft movement. This period reflects the movement away from commercial industrialization towards hand crafted art forms and creativity. Due to its popularity Grueby designs and glazes were widely copied and mass produced, ultimately flooding the market with low-cost reproductions and forcing the pottery company into bankruptcy in 1920. Today the pieces are highly collectible, with a lamp that was paired with a Tiffany shade selling at auction for $286,000! Established in 1900 in Columbus, OH, Federal Glass produced beautiful hand-crafted glassware until the 1920's when it switched over to machine-made products. At that time Federal Glass was a leader in pressed, mold etched pink, green, amber and clear dish ware. It produced more Amber glass than any other depression glass company. Federal Glass established itself in the food service and commercial industries, remaining in business until 1979 when Indiana Glass Company purchased it and acquired its molds.

The Columbia pattern was manufactured from 1938-1942 in clear and pink. This unique design has some heft to it, with the decorative pattern of a central daisy-like ray flower emitting happy bubbles towards its edges. Other patterns made by Federal Glass include:

So this is it. That time one never imagines to come so... soon. Yet as every mother can attest, 'the days are long and the years are short'. For me, this has been an especially difficult change to embrace - The Empty Nest...Even writing it seems to trivialize it. Yet, I had help with this one as Mother Nature saw fit to provide a safe haven for a Robin to build her nest right in view of our kitchen window. It took all of three days for this industrious female to construct a sturdy home with sticks and mud nestled securely in the crotch of a Juniper. It took another three days to lay two eggs, and two weeks for those lovely aqua blues to hatch. Of the two babies, only one survived, despite the mother's valiant and tireless effort with feeding and keeping them warm. What a sight to see, up close and personal, with her wing spread out umbrella-style protecting the hatchlings from heavy rains. Her sharp eyes never left our gaze as we ooggled and aahhed at the antics that came so naturally. And, so the day came a mere two weeks after hatching, when it was time to go... Just... like... that. Time to go, giving us the privilege to witness the very shaky maiden flight. Certainly the parallel was easy to make as the last of my brood flies the coop. We love, we nurture, we raise to send them on their way...There will be no birds in this year's nest...but it will always be feathered and safe when they return.

Economy Glass started out as Morgantown Glass Company in Morgantown, WV, 1899. It became known for high quality, hand blown glassware. In 1903, Morgantown Glass changed its name to Economy Tumbler Glass and introduced colors into its repertoire. From its inception, the 'Continental' line was popular and continued to be manufactured until the company closed its doors in 1937. 'Round Robin' was the only Depression Glass pattern made by Morgantown under the Economy Glass logo. Economy Tumbler Glass reopened as Morgantown Glassware Guild in 1939, introducing bar and stem ware with unique shapes and cool colors including jade, pink, 'Ritz' blue, magenta, amethyst, and black. In 1965, Morgantown Glassware Guild was purchased by and incorporated into the Fostoria Glass Company. Fostoria Glass was in business until 1983, when it too was bought out by Lancaster Colony. Competition from imports effected sustainability and that company folded in 1986.

The Round Robin pattern is so thoroughly modern in its simplicity it is hard to believe it is 75 years old - and still so much in vogue. Happy hunting!

Dell Glass came into existence during the 1930's in Millville, NJ. The company produced lovely decorative glassware, stylized and colored in happy jewel tones of amethyst, turquoise, green as well as clear glass. Tulip dinnerware was its signature pattern with very cool textural and unique detailed elements . As Depression Glass, the pieces are noteworthy for their substantial heft and less delicate nature making them quite practical for everyday use. The Dell Glass Company had showrooms in NYC and Los Angeles only until 1950. Due to its short production span, Tulip pieces are not as abundant as other Depression Glass patterns and are therefore highly sought after by collectors. Made in America to make you smile.

Isn't it so true of some childhood memories remaining as vivid today as the day they occurred. For me it is of my Sicilian grandfather, quintessential forager, donning his ubiquitous hat, sleeveless white ribbed undershirt, khakis and leather work shoes with tomato basket and screwdriver in hand. The mission: scrumptious dandelion greens for a tasty salad to compliment his daily pasta. In his world, life was all about the food. And, I must say, after all these years I have to agree with him. Sweet! is how I describe the bitterness of this particular salad green as the memories of times gone by add to its taste.

Taraxacum officinale, commonly known as the lowly dandelion, was once considered an essential part of a healthy diet. The plant is in the daisy family Compositae, and is loaded with vitamins A and K, as well as omega 3 fatty acids. Tender leaves are best picked in early spring, and can be eaten raw in a salad, sauteed as a side dish, or dried and steeped as a tea. Choose plants growing in wild areas, as many manicured lawns are chemically treated. Oncologists are testing extract from the dandelion root with promising results as an alternative naturopathic treatment of leukemia.

Memorial Day, also known as Decoration Day, commemorates those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for Freedom. It was first observed on 30 May, 1868 at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., with flowers placed at Union and Confederate soldiers' graves. As time marched on, the significance of this day was lost on many of us and it took a Declaration by Congress in 2000 to pass the National Moment of Remembrance so that 'at 3 PM all Americans voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence...'

C is for China

China in this context refers to a type of fine pottery/table ware made from kaolin clay heralding from the Kao-ling area of China. This region set a standard for its exceptionally fine translucent porcelain that was unsurpassed until the late 18th C. Porcelain China can be one of three types based on the minerals which are added into the kaolin base: Hard Paste (from China for Centuries, grey/blue color, easily chipped), Soft Paste (from Europe to simulate Chinese porcelain, creamy color, fragile), and Bone China (Stoke-on-Trent, England by Josiah Spode, 1770, white color, translucent, durable). Wedgwood, founded by Josiah Wedgwood in 1765, imitated hard paste porcelain and joined the ranks of Staffordshire manufacturers in producing fine china. In 1771 the Limoges region of France became noted for its beautiful, soft paste porcelain known to this day as Limoges.

Hard Paste China was imported by the boatload into the US during the late 19th C, via the East India Company of England. Pieces known as Canton and Nanking Ware were popularly decorated in the Blue Willow pattern and were affordable alternatives to the exquisite Bone China manufactured by Josiah Spode. As a ceramicist and chemist, Spode is credited with perfecting Fine Bone China as we know it today. Ox bone is incorporated into the kaolin clay mix, creating the whitest, strongest, most translucent china in the world. Spode China is still manufactured and graces the homes of heads of state, Royalty and Presidents.

B is for Bristol Glass

Although the name Bristol Glass refers to the town in England that originally produced this type of glassware during the mid 1700's, it became known as a form of 19th C Art Glass which was replicated across England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and the United States. It is mold blown, semi-opaque opaline (white), relatively thin glass. Bristol Opaque White Glass has a satin-like powdery feel to it, is rather soft to the touch and light weight often with a visible pontil (nip on bottom from the blower's tube). The world witnessed an explosion of this elegant type of glass during the Victorian era, from the 1840's through the 1930's or so. The glass is always hand blown, hand decorated and quite fragile. Due to its popularity and the abundance with which it was produced, Bristol Glass can be had today at fairly moderate prices. It affords a beautiful way to bring vintage art glass from long ago into your home. Use it, love it, enjoy it!

The more things change the more things stay the same!

Eighty eight years ago, on 26 April, 1923, Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon married Prince Albert Duke of York. As Queen Consort of King George VI (known to her as 'Bertie' and subject of the acclaimed film The King's Speech), she was known as the 'Smiling Duchess' for her affable demeanor; Queen Mum to the world, real mum to Elizabeth (current Queen Elizabeth II) and Margaret. Albert proposed to this feisty lady three times before she finally accepted, being "afraid never, never again to be free to think, speak, and act as I feel I really ought to." And, so, Albert married this commoner, considered quite the gesture of Royal modernization at the time. In true maverick form, Elizabeth began the traditions of exchanging vows in Westminster Abbey and placing her Wedding bouquet at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Every Royal Wedding has since followed suit in both endeavors. Widowed at the age of 51 she assumed the position of family matriarch and embodied traditional family values and strong ethics of public service. She lived a long life to 101, and was very much well loved.

So, as we look forward to Ye Royal Wedding this 29 April, 2011 between Prince William and Catherine Middleton we may reflect on this definition of Wedding: 'to be obstinately attached or devoted to an activity, belief, or system; a pledge of your love and your life to another'. Begun in 1905 by Isaac J. Collins and named after the Hocking River in Lancaster, OH, Hocking Glass started out with an initial investment of $25,000. In the first year alone, over $20,000 of hand blown glassware was sold. Production steadily increased with the invention of machine-made glass despite the set back of a devastating fire to the plant in 1924. Through the years the company aggressively purchased Lancaster Glass Co., Standard Glass Co., and Anchor Cap Corp. in 1937 to become Anchor Hocking Glass. It remained competitive through the depression with advances in machinery and production that manufactured 90 glasses per minute at half the cost. Anchor Hocking Glass produced more designs during the Depression era than any other glass company including pressed glass, acid-etched and mold-etched patterns. It continued to acquire companies such as Carr-Lowrey in 1944, and the rapid growth of the soft-drink industry in the 1960's made it among the top producers of glass containers, as well as glass tableware in the world! In less than 60 years Anchor Hocking Glass sales topped $150 million. Its International Division opened in 1963, with operations in 105 countries. In 1968 the company dropped 'Glass' from its name and acquired Plastics Inc. and Amerock Corporation (hardware) as the advent of injection-molded plastic packaging took hold. The years from 1986 - 1995 brought continuous challenges in management, takeovers, and acquisitions as ultimately the Newell Co., run by David Ferguson, led Anchor Hocking into the 21st C. Despite drastic changes to products and management style, Anchor Hocking filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2006.

Who hasn't dreamed of being a writer...Jotting down anecdotes, creating memorable imagery through words, formulating unforgettable stories, weaving plots and tales with symbolism to be pondered...all in the name of expression. Linda Emma is one of those people who has followed her dream of becoming a writer. Her first novel, Prime Meridian, was published in 2009. It tells the tale of a middle-aged mom, Jenna, married to Kevin, and living the 'dream' in the small town of Meridian. The story unfolds as Jenna learns of the death of Dan, a college sweetheart and photographer for CNN on assignment in Iraq. Memories surface and Jenna struggles with the realities of her current life, and the possibility that she may NOT be living life to her fullest potential after all. I had the pleasure of speaking with Linda and gaining some insight into her world:

1. Tell us a few things about yourself.

"I graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Journalism. I have worked in Newspapers, Public Relations and the business world. I live in Topsfield with my husband, two children, and pets."

2. What are some favorite interests and did they lead to your pursuit of writing?

"I enjoy writing as a way of expressing myself. I write predominantly in the morning and give myself a deadline to complete certain tasks in order to stay on track. This book, Prime Meridian, represents a kind of new beginning for a middle aged woman with a seemingly happy life. She gets thrown a situation and development of the characters in the book begins. I enjoy exploring experiences, plots and outcomes based on a particular story line that often develops with twists and turns."

3. What is a typical day for you?

"A typical day is tutoring at Endicott College, in Beverly, Massachusetts, four days a week. The students are Communications majors and my role is to point them in the direction of resources. Students today are instructed very differently from the way we were taught. Currently, thesis writing is the norm, with supporting facts and conclusions to every paragraph written. Each paper is five paragraphs long, which is a good skill to develop, yet it doesn't necessarily help with creative writing. Sometimes the students need affirmation that they are, indeed, good writers, and they need someone to give them that push toward the possibility of making a living out of it."

4. What are some short term goals? Long term goals?

"A short term goal is to write everyday. With this book I started out writing five days a week, and progressed to seven days a week. It is written from a woman's voice for a women's audience, and I had to learn what to cut and what not to cut to effectively tell the story. For this book, I used a very talented art student to design the cover - Laura Kennedy who was a senior at Masconomet Regional High School. I solicited the help from friends, colleagues, relatives and teachers to read the draft and make comments. A long term goal is to write another book, and I am thinking ahead always to the next book... I feel a book is never finished, although it is technically finished once it is published with an ISBN number. "

5. What inspired you to write?

"Anything - if something happens with my children, if I bump into a friend...I try to write about things that I observe throughout the day. I need to express myself; it is a creative outlet. It took me a while to realize I am a writer. Now, I know it is as much as who I am as is my background and it is something I cannot change. To be published is to feel validated!"

6. How would you describe your writing style?

"If I am writing for a Newspaper, it is in the style of Journalism (who, what, why, where, when). If I am writing for a Book, it is in a creative style to paint a picture."

7. Do you have a favorite author?

"A favorite author depends on the mood I'm in at the time. I love many books and authors. My favorite investigative reporter of all time is Bob Woodward. "

8. What are some obstacles you had to overcome to publish your work?

"There are many obstacles and it can be quite a frustrating process. Cold calls and letters to agents and publishers and specifically finding a Literary Agent and Publisher who will take you on. It is daunting work, unless you wish to self-publish. I was successful finding a publisher in Oregon with Wyatt-MacKenzie."

9. Do you have a particular skill beyond the skill of writing that lends itself to success in writing a book?

"I would say a good skill is acknowledging I am a good writer, and being comfortable self-promoting my book. Publishing a book means success! Book signings, and appearances help spread the word about you as an author and affects the number of books that may be sold, which publishers are interested in. Another valuable skill to have is being a good editor."

The city of Zanesville, Ohio, founded in 1800, became an important commercial center for craftsmen skilled in pottery making, due to its location at the junction of the Lickings and Muskingham Rivers and its incredible wealth of clay reserves. Zanesville Art Pottery was founded on 25 February 1901 by David Schmidt. Albert Radford who later founded Radford Pottery, was business manager. Zanesville Art Pottery was in business until 1920 when it was was sold to Weller Pottery, one of the largest producers of Art Pottery in the world! Potteries in Zanesville included the prominent Samuel A. Weller Pottery from 1872 to 1948, Zanesville Stoneware Company from 1887 to 2002, Roseville Pottery from 1892 to 1954, McCoy Pottery from 1910 to 1967, and Shawnee Pottery from 1937 to 1961. Early wares included utilitarian stoneware and progressed to dinnerware as well as decorative art pottery lines for vases and pots. Art Pottery - to know it is to LOVE it!

Yellowware is a buff colored clay produced in England and Scotland in the 16th and 17th C. Pieces were made in America before the Revolutionary Ware (1775-1783) as a transition from redware (porous terra cotta earthenware). Yellowware was less expensive to make and more durable due to lower levels of iron which vitrifies at higher firing temperatures. By the late 1800's yellowware was present throughout New England as the clay was abundant along the Northeast and Ohio Valley Riverbanks of NY, NJ, and PA. Although these clay deposits were not plentiful in CT, the demand forced potters to supply yellow clays to all parts of New England. Potteries included the Goodwin Brothers (Hartford, CT), Asa Hill and LV Wheeler (Norwich Pottery Works), Chase Chamberlain Sutenburg, Sidney Risely, Noad and George Day, Smith Pottery, and Roseville Pottery (OH). Bennington Pottery (VT) still produces yellow ware to this day. Kitchen items such as crocks, bowls, plates and cups were made plain or hand decorated with a single band of white, blue or brown, or were spattered. The yellow color can range from corn yellow to dark mustard. Diameters of yellow ware bowls range from a diminutive 3" to a substantial 18" with early pieces made by hand and thrown on a potters wheel. PIeces made after the mid 1800's were manufactured in molds which afforded more decorative elements including slip banding, geometric, floral and scenic motifs. Yellowware was very popular in kitchens of the 19th C to early 20th C, with millions of bowls produced between 1850 - 1930. Signed pieces account for only 5% of all yellow ware and subsequently are worth about 25% more. To verify authenticity the piece must have a clear glaze over the yellow clay base, NOT a yellow glaze. Mold marks and designs indicate the age of a piece. Rims of bowls made in the 1800's are generally rolled, with bowls from the 1900's less rounded with a wide-collared rim. The 1930's to the 1940's brought an end to the popularity of this type of pottery, as tastes changed and the preferences turned to white.

The glaze on all pieces of yellowware contains lead, therefore it is important not to store food in it and avoid using chipped pieces for food preparation. To own a bowl or two of lovely yellowware will most certainly grace your kitchen with pizazz and history, and makes for an interesting display. Pieces are fairly abundant and most affordable.

With the myriad of problems in this world, I especially applaud the Oscar decisions for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for a film chronicling a personal disability being overcome. Ode to MAS*H : 28 February 28 Years Ago

Twenty eight years ago today on 28 February, 1983 the finale of M*A*S*H was viewed by an estimated 106 million Americans. It was the 251st, 2.5 hour episode of its 11th season, entitled Goodbye, Farewell and Amen, which chronicles a 3 year military conflict that was as much about Vietnam (1955-1975) as Korea (1950-1953). M*A*S*H follows a team of doctors and support staff at the 4077th MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) unit, Uijeongbu, South Korea. The intent was to highlight the effects of war on individuals with the disruption and havoc it wreaks in their lives all the while nodding to those qualities of human resilience, optimism, and love. It is considered a medical drama/ black comedy or 'dramedy', produced by Larry Gelbart and adapted from the 1970 film MASH, which was based on Richard Hooker's 1968 book, MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors. The soundtrack, Suicide is Painless, written by John Mandel and Mike Altman to this day conjures up images of that 407th unit of M*A*S*H. That final episode remains the most watched television broadcast in American history which is a tribute to its quality of content, truth in matter, and sterling entertainment. Goodbye, Farewell and Amen... to 'Hawkeye', 'Hot Lips Houlihan', 'Klinger', 'Trapper', 'Radar', 'The Colonel', 'Reverend' Frank, and Charles...1972 - 1983.

Watt Pottery was owned and operated by the W.J. Watt family of Crooksville, Ohio from 1922 - 1965. Watt bought out the Globe Stoneware Company and from the 1920's through the mid- 1930's manufactured utilitarian stoneware such as crocks, butter churns, jars and jugs. These pieces are marked with an eagle or acorn stamped in blue, with gallon measures marked within a circle. In 1935 Watt Pottery dropped its stoneware line in favor of more lightweight ovenware that could withstand high cooking temperatures. By the 1940's the company concentrated its kitchen-ware glazes of solid colors, impressed clearly below with 'MADE IN USA' and 'Oven Ware' as well as hand decorated patterns containing simple brush strokes in basic two to three color schemes. The classic patterns produced from 1949-1953 include Rio Rose (with three leaves), Pansy (with four leaves), Moonflower, Dogwood, White Daisy, and Cross-Hatch. The hand decorated patterns most collected include: Starflower (1951), Apple (three leaves, 1952), Cherry (1952), Silhouette (1953), Rooster (1955), Dutch Tulip (1956), Tear Drop/American Red Bud (five petals, 1957), Morning Glory (1958), Autumn Foliage (1959), Double Apple (1959), Tulip (1961). From the 1950's through the 1960's Yellow Ware was produced as advertising sales promotional bowls, creamers and pitchers. Watt pieces are well marked and large, often covering the entire bottom, with deeply impressed concentric rings, a mold number and the words 'Watt' and 'Oven Ware USA'. Watt Pottery Company has made hundreds of different items through its 43 year history, until fire destroyed the facility in 1965. Collect a piece of Made in the USA history today and feel the love at home!

Valentine's Day is celebrated in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, U.K., France and Australia. This celebration of lovers dates back to the Middle Ages with the oldest known written Valentine on display in the British Museum. Composed in 1415 by Charles Duke of Orleans, it was written to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. While some believe Valentine's Day celebrates the anniversary of the Martyr Valentinus the Presbyter's death, others claim it was Pope Gelasius in 498 AD who sought to dispel the Roman pagan holiday of fertility and mating, thus proclaiming St. Valentine's Day as a religious commemoration. Valentine's Day as a celebration of love emerged in popularity in the 17th C and by the middle of the 18th C it was common for friends and lovers to exchange small tokens of handwritten affections. Improved technology provided easy access to ready-made printed cards and the ease of forwarding sentiments to loved ones bloomed rapidly. It is estimated that 141 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged with 85% of these purchased by women....hmmm, interesting little tidbit.... Happy Valentine's Day To All !

Red Fort, New Dehli

Agra, Taj Mahal, built entirely of marble,is one of the most perfect buildings in the world, with an almost surreal serenity despite hoards of tourists. It is a spectacular feat of engineering and design encompassing a 186 square foot building, capped by a 70 foot diameter, 120 foot tall dome surrounded by 4 minarets (prayer towers) standing 133 feet tall.

The world's costliest mausoleum, this Shrine of Love sits on the banks of the Yamuna River, with passages from the Quern inscribed into its Islamic architecture. Built from 1636 - 1653 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Darjeeling Tea, Masala and Pashmina

India. Just the name evokes intrigue, mysticism, and emotion. It is the Birthplace of Hinduism and Buddhism which both remain influences in the Indian society. Hinduism effected the caste system, or social classes which is still practiced today, albeit illegally. And, Buddhism equates to spiritualism through the practice of meditation and belief in dharma (the moral law which guides ones life; considered the very foundation of life and a necessity to achieve good karma) and karma (the actions undertaken by the body and the mind which determine the state of ones existence in the reincarnated life). Fittingly, the National Flower of India is the Lotus, Nelumbo nucifera, an exotically beautiful aquatic plant symbolizing Hindu gods and goddesses, enlightenment, purity and knowledge. Historically, the entire continent had been conquered and invaded by foreigners throughout its 75,000 year history. It was ruled by the Mauryan dynasty, 321-185 BC, which was one of the worlds largest empires at the time. From the 4th C through the 11th C, Hindu religious and intellectuals resurged and this period of time came to be known as the Golden Age of India as Hinduism and Buddhism spread to much of Asia at that time. From the 10th C through the 15th C Muslim rule influenced art and architecture. Upon the gradual decline of the Mughal Empire in the 18th C, opportunity presented itself for the British East India Company to gain a foothold and it was from that period through the 19th C that India was gradually annexed by the British East India Company. Dissatisfaction led to the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and resulted in sovereign rule by the British Crown. During this time and through the mid 20th C India witnessed rapid infrastructure development with surging population growth encompassing economic decline. Its struggle for independence from England was won and complete in 1947; there exists 7 union territories, 28 states. Both the United States and India are considered the worlds largest democracies, although the Indian President's role is largely ceremonial with national executive power centered in the cabinet led by the Prime Minister. It is recognized as the third largest economy in Asia, behind China and Japan.

India is a country of contrasts: From the serenity of the Himalayans to the astounding beauty of its ancient monuments, with the Taj Mahal as one of the 7 Wonders of the World, to its jammed packed open-air bazaars, India seems otherworldly. As a country one third the size of the United States with almost three times the population (1,155,347,678!), it remains to be experienced in all its glory. Peace Be Upon You!

V is for Van Briggle

Van Briggle Pottery is considered the oldest continuously operating Art Pottery in the United States. Begun in 1901 in Colorado by Artus and Anne Van Briggle, it had quite the impact on the Art Nouveau movement at the time. Artus Van Briggle, born in 1869, was introduced to painting at an early age by his artist parents. At the age of 17, he decorated china dolls in Cincinnati, OH, and later took a job at Rookwood Pottery where he excelled at hand painting original designs. Maria Storer, founder of Rookwood, was so impressed with Artus' talent she sent him to Paris, France to study art at L'Academie Julian. This exposed him to numerous artistic styles and he became enamored with matte glazes of the Chinese Ming Dynasty. This was also where he met his future wife, Anne Lawrence Gregory, also an accomplished artist. The couple moved back to Ohio with Artus resuming work at Rookwood. In 1899 due to a bout with tuberculosis, they moved to the therapeutic, drier air of Colorado Springs, Colorado while continuing to experiment on pottery glazes. Artus perfected a satiny matte glaze akin to those he loved in Paris and opened Van Briggle Pottery. He and Anne created countless designs in the Art Nouveau style until his untimely death in 1904, at the age of 35. Anne continued the pottery business adding countless designs. She remarried in 1908 and moved to Denver in 1910 until her death in 1929. The property in Colorado Springs was leased and then sold several times. Its current owner and chief designer is Craig A. Stevenson.

The early work of Van Briggle pottery - through the 1920's - are most sought after pieces of art. The lovely matte finish is almost powdery soft to the touch with colors ranging from turquoise blue, maroon, green and yellow. Couple this with the tragic love story of two very talented artists and you have really something to admire and cherish. Pieces of Van Briggle Pottery display that spectacular signature blue color as modern today as it was 100 years ago. Enjoy!

Today is the day we celebrate the Birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, 1929-1968. In 1983, then President Ronald Reagan signed this commemorative day into law as a National Holiday for all to reflect on the man who was in constant pursuit of truth and nonviolent action. Martin Luther King strove to make the United States of America a more just nation, a more peaceful nation, a more noble nation. As a Baptist Minister and prominent leader in the civil rights movement, he strove to effect change in peaceful ways yet ironically his life was taken violently; assassinated by James Earl Ray on 4 April, 1968 in Memphis, TN. King's dream was just unfolding: to end racial segregation in public schools, to produce meaningful civil rights legislation, to prohibit racial discrimination in employment, and to protect civil rights activists from police brutality. The March on Washington in 1963 was 250,000 strong. His famous 'I Have a Dream Speech' propelled civil rights to the top of the political agenda in the US and facilitated passage of the C ivil Rights Act of 1964. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Listen and be inspired by this great orators voice here as Dr. King alludes to the Gettysburg Address, passages from the Bible, and Shakespeare. "... I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed 'We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal'...I have a dream that one day my four little children will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character....Black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics will be able to join hands and sing...'Free at last! U is for Uranium Glass

Uranium Glass, also known as Vaseline Glass, is the name given glass resembling the color of petroleum jelly at the time of the early 20th C. The glass fluoresces bright green under ultra-violet (black) light due to the addition of uranium salt known as uranium dioxide, which is added during the molten stage. This color is more yellow/green than the green of Depression Glass, which contains iron oxide as its colorant. Depression Glass green does not fluoresce. The use of uranium as a colorant in glass dates back to 79 AD, where it was found to be a part of a yellow mosaic glass tile in a Roman villa, Bay of Naples. It was Martin Klaproth, 1743-1817, who experimented with uranium as a coloring element in glass. By the 1830's, many companies in Europe were producing Vaseline Glass, including Adams & Co., Steuben Glass, Cambridge Glass Co., and Baccarat. The Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. manufactured it in the United States beginning in the 1840's. Names for the color of the glass include: citron, jasmine, golden green, mustard, canary, and Florentine. Uranium glass colors range from yellow to green depending on the oxidation state and concentration of the metal ions present. The higher the uranium dioxide content in the glass, the greater the coloring effect. Ultra violet radiation excites the outer electrons of the uranium atoms, exuding bright green energy which is the fluorescence we see.

In 1943 through the Cold War of the 1950's, the U.S. government halted the production of Vaseline Glass, as uranium became a heavily regulated substance used in missiles and warheads. In 1958, depleted uranium dioxide was allowed to be used in glass once again. The uranium content of Vaseline Glass is estimated to be 2% by weight, with some glass from the early 20th C containing as much as 25%. As a form of Art Glass, Vaseline Glass is considered highly collectible and strikes a very cool statement with its intensity and vibrancy. Keep an eye out for it; I guarantee you will know it when you see it. And, it's always fun to get out the black light, do a little dance, and watch it glow!

This is the time of year when many of us evaluate and reassess aspects of our lives. What makes us happy; what wasn't successful; what is our plan to get to the bottom of things and to simply change for the better? The paradox of this is that in order to simplify we must have an understanding of the complex. In essence, simplicity is a thoughtful process! My last post explained our family's New Years ritual of picking Angel Cards: mine is 'Freedom' which is a word loaded with meaning for me to reflect on this year of 2011. It is most fitting today, as this is the day my youngest flies - literally he is in the air as I write this - to India. Although he graduates from College in May, his abilities have landed him an opportunity of a lifetime and he will venture so far from this nest to make his mark. I had a restless sleep last night; elated for him and his excitement, anxious at the same time for dangers that may be, and sad for my loss. I do realize now it is important to give myself the time to think. That is how I will make peace with this change, and embrace the many changes ahead. So today, I will sip that cup of Darjeeling tea- amidst the remnant and forlorn decorations, in the quiet and the dinn of this now empty house - and simply, think.

T is for Transferware

The transferware printing process was developed by John Sadler and Guy Green of Liverpool England in 1756. Transfer printing on earthenware, ironstone, porcelain and bone china is a process whereby a design is etched onto a copper plate which is then inked. The next step transfers that design to a special tissue which is then laid onto the piece, glazed and fired. Transferware pieces have a crispness to the pattern, resembling a decal. Elaborate transfer patterns are a direct response to the plain utilitarian white ware of the times. Only the affluent could afford colorful dish ware, which was a labor intensive process involving hand painting by artists. Due to its ability to be mass produced, transferware became an affordable luxury, with 'Chinese blue' an early favorite along with Asian-inspired motifs. It was initially produced in one color only, with blue the priciest and brown the least expensive. There were many hues of blue, red -'pink', black -'jet', brown -'sienna', purple - 'mulberry', and green. Flow Blue was a mistake due to high heat of firing and, later, the addition of lime and/or chloride of ammonia to achieve the effect. Although considered a manufacturers error, flow blue became the most popular color from the mid 1800's to the early 1900's. Patterns include Romantic, Aesthetic, and Historic. Transferware is often registered and dated under the English system of marks and numerals. Its value is determined by the date, rarity of the pattern, and print quality. The most collectible items were made in the early 19th C, yet early 20th C transferware is fairly abundant and easy to find. Enjoy the hunt!

A lover of all things beautiful, a stickler for chic elegant and polished,...a person with no patience when it comes to wrapping. My friend Pam has a gift and gives a gift of beauty - always. Her taste is exquisite and her ability to put it together amazes me; no matter how simple the item inside, it is the item outside that combines to make it special. In 1837, Tiffany and Company was founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany and Teddy Young as a stationery and 'fancy goods emporium' in New York City. Tiffany and Company's entry into the silverware business began in 1847 when the store retailed silver from several NY silversmiths, including the very talented John C. Moore. It was the increased demand for silver which lead Tiffany to open its own silversmith shop, with John Moore at its helm. Charles Tiffany took over as sole proprietor in 1853 and expanded the business by opening stores in major cities throughout the world. By 1855, despite the looming recession, Tiffany & Co. was recognized as the leading silverware house in NY. In 1867 it became the first US firm to win an award for Excellence in Silverware at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. John Moore was joined by his son Edward and together they catapulted Tiffany to world-wide fame. For well over 160 years the name Tiffany has been synonymous with 'beautiful objects of unsurpassed quality'. From sterling flatware, hollowware and jewelry, to stained glass windows and lamps by Louis Comfort Tiffany, the name is recognized internationally as a trademark for beauty and elegance.

1. How did you come into this business; from what background?

"I used to be in the Antique Business..until I couldn't carry the furniture anymore. I began buying at auctions, at the age of 17, with my mother who encouraged me to 'always buy the best'. A woman named Marge introduced me to the wholesale silver business which I very much enjoyed, in addition to other antiques. The silver part of the business began with my husband around 1975, when we started collecting early American silver from the late 1700's. I began searching for choice pieces myself and learned to identify top quality items. I am very particular and careful in my purchases.

2. Do you have a particular skill that serves you well?

"I have an eye for detail, pay attention at auctions, and learn from established dealers. It is important to be educated and selective. I got lists and lists from suppliers and I became knowledgeable on what to look for in an item of value. I am the type of person who is a perfectionist and wants to do things for myself. Quality of a piece is the most important part of it. Big businesses often overlook flaws. That is what sets me apart."

3. What were some major obstacles you had to resolve to forge ahead in your business?

"I have been a widow for more than twenty five years and it was difficult at times to transport everything by myself. From the tables, to the displays, to the silver as well as driving the van to and from shows (and sleeping in it!) - it was tough going as I got older. It was these obstacles that ultimately led me to the computer. It took a year or two, and I was up and running with my Silver Matching Service business. I had to learn to take all my digital photos, and carry on my business via the web. I find one of the most frustrating parts of it all is the paperwork, which never seems to end!"

4. Tell us a little bit about your education and how it contributed to your success as a business woman.

"I graduated from Middlebury College in 1942, with a B.A. in French. At the time, I was required to take a Political Science class which was so difficult I wished to drop it. Upon requesting of the Professor, I was promptly denied with 'Don't you suppose you will learn something, Dorothy?'. . That very professor wrote in a recommendation: 'Although not an A student, Dorothy is the type of individual who has such perseverance she will succeed in anything.' That one experience stayed with me and shaped me into the person I am today.

5. Describe yourself in six words or less.

"I am known for being determined and independent. I follow what I know to be true, with pricing objects, and in dealings with customers. I tend to not follow the pack and practice business etiquette with integrity.

6. What aspect do you enjoy most, and least, about your business?

"I love learning something new everyday. I enjoy going to shows, and finding choice pieces on e-bay. Packaging is my least favorite part of the business; there is not much to stimulate your thoughts!

8. What is your most treasured possession?

"I would have to say it is early Tiffany "English King"pattern (1900), service for 12! This set is special in that it came from one family, and even includes serving pieces. It could fetch $35,000 today. Tiffany's craftsmanship shows exquisitely and is truly a work of art.
